The first step to incorporating a stability ball into your workout routine is to make sure you purchase the right size of ball.

The proper sized stability ball is a very personal matter as it depends on your height. For example, I would find the proper size for myself by sitting on a ball. When I find the one that's the proper size for my height, my knees and hips will bend at a 90-degree angle.

When sizing stability balls, match your height to the following ball size:

  • 5-foot or less purchase a stability ball that's 45-centemeters high.
  • 5-feet to 5'10 purchase a ball that's 55-centimeters high.
  • 511 or taller purchase a ball that's 65-centemeters high.

A few other things I would recommend when shopping for a stability ball are:

Burst Resistance I'm not joking, some cheap stability balls have been known to burst suddenly, leaving the user nursing a bruised behind. Look for a ball with burst-resistance, which means the ball has a pinhole opening that allows air to leak out slowly if it should suffer a tear or puncture. In general, stability balls are pretty durable. It's best to keep your ball workouts reserved to a carpeted or hardwood surfaces, but if you can't, just keep it away from sand, pins, pebbles and cat litter to prolong its life.

Color It's a common misconception that color has anything to do with your ball's hardness. Stability balls can come in any color mine is red; my friend Kim's is green they feel the same to me.

Inflation The hardness of your ball will be up to the user when they inflate the ball. Just remember that the more the ball is blown up, the harder the ball will be and the more difficult the ball will be to control when doing exercises on it. Beginners or those with bad backs should leave their ball a little soft.
