If you're obese then you know that the biggest misjudgment a person can make about you is judging you by how much you weigh. Then, why I ask, do we do it to ourselves when we're trying to shed unwanted body fat?

Your bathroom scale can be your worst enemy when it comes to exercise motivation. In reality one's body weight changes so much in a single day after sleeping, eating a meal, going to the washroom, drinking a large glass of water a scale is a very unsupportive weight loss tool.

Body fat calipers ($30 online), on the other hand, are apparatuses used to measure areas of subcutaneous fat (fat that exists under the skin) on the body. The caliper measurements are taken and a body fat percentage is calculated. A healthy body fat percentage is one within the low to average range for your gender and age.

To measure your own body fat:

  • Body fat calipers are used to measure progress. If you're in an undesirable body fat category don't focus on tables or norms. Focus on each individual skin fold measurement and how much you've lost.
  • Take body fat measurements at the same time every day. Never test immediately after exercising or right after eating.
  • Take readings quickly after applying the calipers, prolonged delay can significantly throw off the skin-fold measurement.
