What you need to know about this condition

If you spend most of your day typing, then you might have experienced wrist pain or discomfort at one time or another. This pain could be the result of typing with your wrist in an improper position, which is likely due to a lack of support for your wrist and forearms. The proper typing position for your wrist is the neutral position, with very little flexion or extension. Typing with your wrists in the improper position, flexed or extended, will decrease the space in the carpal tunnel. A smaller space makes it more likely that the flexor tendons will rub against the carpal bones and become irritated.

Wrist Anatomy

To paint a better picture, I will try to describe the anatomy of the wrist. The wrist is made up of the carpal bones and the flexor retinaculum, which together form the carpal tunnel. It is through this tunnel that the flexor tendons and median nerve pass. As I mentioned earlier, typing in a non-neutral position repeatedly for extended periods of time will likely cause irritation of the flexor tendons. You would likely start feeling some pain or discomfort in your wrists, which you could combat with rest, ice and stretching. Using wrist supports or a wrist brace could also help the condition.

Continuing to type without treating your condition could lead to something much worse: carpal tunnel syndrome. The pain experienced with this repetitive-use injury is cause by the irritation of the median nerve, which will occur if the space in the carpal tunnel is decreased significantly. Typing all day with your wrists improperly positioned will continue to irritate the flexor tendons and lead to a thickening of the tendon sheaths, due to the inflammation. This thickening would result in the carpal tunnel getting even smaller in diameter.
