Foot pain is worse than a pain in the butt!

Who knew that such a small thing could make life so complicated? A bit of pain doesn’t seem like such a big deal, when you’re looking in from the outside. But put a blister on the back of your own heel, a cramp in the arch of your foot, or an infection in a toenail , and watch how quickly that discomfort becomes all-consuming.

Feet are fine-tuned instruments. Like our hands, they have a dense concentration of muscles, nerves, ligaments and bones. Unlike our hands, however, they take a brutal pounding with every step we take. Have you ever heard the saying that walking is really just controlled falling? Well, it’s true: we reach forward with a leg, throwing our balance off, and then catch ourselves with the outstretched foot. In the process, hundreds of pounds are directed into the complex biological mechanism of the foot.

Feet do a good job, most of the time. But sometimes they fail. We overstress them with high-volume exercise, or ask them to do something they aren’t prepared to do. Sometimes the frailty is genetic , while other times it’s a product of our environment. In both cases, an unexpected weakness can be mentally and physically painful.

And don’t forget the skin : the skin seals the foot’s structures into an immune-resistant, waterproof package. But even this can fail. Microorganisms can breach the skin. Dampness can deteriorate the skin. And friction can wear down the skin. Once the skin...
