There's a reason why chin-ups were my nasty gym teacher's favorite form of punishment. Chin-ups are primitive and grueling just ask a soldier so they equal a pretty memorable penalty, especially for an out-of-shape kid like I was.

Chin-ups target the lats or "latissimus dorsi" (or the outer back), but they also work the muscles in your entire back, biceps, forearms, shoulders, neck, triceps and because of the way you're made to hold yourself stiffly, they're a tremendous way to toughen those abdominals.

Pull-ups are similar to chin-ups except you grab the bar with your palms facing outward, targeting a slightly different set of muscles. When performing chin-ups I use a supinated grip (meaning my palms face towards my face) while with pull-ups I use a pronated grip (meaning my palms face away from my face).

The problem with chin-ups and pull-ups is that very few people can do them and even fewer want to do them. I'm a firm believer in the fact that if I dread a certain exercise, I must be pretty bad at it. So to improve my relationship with the chin-up I decided to install a doorway chin-up bar in my apartment.

My doorway chin-up/pull-up bar (about $35 online) is easy to install or remove from my doorway because it doesn't require any drilling or screws in the doorframe. It simply secures into any 24-inch to 32-inch standard doorway and it can support approximately 300-pounds. Better still, I can place it in the doorframe for chin-ups and pull-ups or place it on the floor to act like a push up bar to do push-ups or dips.

The reason why most people run screaming from doing chin-ups is because they can't lift their body weight up more than a couple times.

Lifting your body weight will take some training and use of the proper form:

  • Grip you chin-up bar with a supinated grip (Figure 01).
