If you're surprised you can even do one bench press rep, let alone worrying about doing it in an inclined position, then a flat bench might be all you can handle for the time being.

I'd recommend a flat bench for anyone who is just starting to weight lift and has decided to set up a workout space at home. Flat benches start at about $65 online, compared to $100 for a multi-purpose bench with all 3 incline, decline and flat bench positions. If you're just stating to dabble in weightlifting and you're not entirely sure if you're going to stick with it, then a flat bench and a few dumbbells won't break the bank, but they'll do the trick.

Flat benches are the best way to work out with dumbbells. For example, if you're performing chest exercises on a flat bench, you'll feel how lying flat on the bench emphasizes the muscle fibers in the center of your chest.

Many will argue that performing chest exercises in an inclined position will force you to work harder [incline utility bench] , but at the beginning you should be more concerned with perfecting your form on a flat bench than with isolating your muscles. As your form improves, a flat bench can be slid under and used with a Smith machine or rack system for heavier lifts, or substituted with an incline bench.
