Sports are good for you. Keep telling yourself that, because it’s true. One of the best ways to avoid injuries such as plantar fasciitis , particularly as we age, is to keep active. New research is always coming out backing up the health benefits of recreational activities and sports for people of all ages, even the elderly.

But there are no guarantees. While sports may, on average, be good for us, for a few unlucky individuals out of every group, athletics lead to injury and some period of convalescence. Few sports injuries hamper our lifestyles more than ones that strike our feet.

Heel bursitis

The heel bone is padded with fat. But between the fat and the bone is a sack of fluid called a bursa. Overuse can cause inflammation and pain in the bursa. Rest will probably be prescribed. You may also need a shoe insert. Long-term disability may be treated with steroids.

Stress fractures

These are frequently found in the foot’s metatarsal bones . They’re the result of cumulative stress. Athletes who overtrain are at risk for stress fractures. Listen to your body. If you repeatedly experience pain and swelling along a bone, you may have - or be working towards - a stress fracture.

Achilles tendon

This vital structure can suffer from a large number of conditions. Bursitis occurs when the sack of fluid between the heel bone and the tendon grows inflamed. The tendon itself can suffer from a partial or complete rupture. More common, though, is tendinitis.
