Foot Joint Pain

Your feet may be aching for a good reason

If you’re middle-aged or older and experiencing regular foot pain - especially if it appears to be without any cause - you may be suffering from arthritis. Arthritis can take many forms, but two kinds of arthritis that commonly afflict feet are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

This form is caused by wear and tear, and can crop up at the scene of old, supposedly healed injuries. As we get older, protective cartilage in joints can degenerate and wear thin from use. The result can be inflammation and pain. With so many bones and joints in the foot, it’s no wonder these extremities can be hit with this ailment.

Some of the more common locales in the foot to be plagued with osteoarthritis include:

  • The ankle
  • The hindfoot, where three joints are found
  • The midfoot, where metatarsals connect to the smaller cuneiforms
  • The big toe, where it connects to the metatarsal

If you’re feeling stiffness, pain or reduced range of motion in these joints, the cause may be osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis

This is a disease that attacks the entire body; it’s not caused by injury, overuse or activity-caused degeneration (although all three may add to the discomfort and damage associated with the condition). According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 90 percent of people with RA (rheumatoid arthritis) will eventually experience symptoms in their feet or ankles. So, if you suffer from RA, you should make yourself aware of its effects on your feet. Symptoms usually start at the extremities - toes - and move up. The cause of RA is unknown - there may be a genetic component - but some researchers believe the disease is activated by an environmental or chemical trigger. The end result is that your immune system, which is supposed to protect you, attacks your body at the joints.

As with osteoarthritis, pain, swelling, stiffness and limited mobility may be symptoms. ...
