How to Treat a Chest Strain

This issue's focus will be on the chest muscles. Medically known as the Pectoralis Major Fig 1.1 and Pectoralis Minor Fig 1.2. Injuries in these muscles most commonly result from weightlifting. Strain occurs when too much weight is used or too many reps are done. It is okay to push your maximum, but you also have to know your limitations. Although some of these injuries occur in the experienced weightlifter, most occur in the beginner. These are due to limited knowledge in weightlifting or exceeding their limitations. I have also seen this injury occur in defencemen, either hockey or football, when they try to straight arm the opponent coming down on them. This can be due to improper warm-up, but in most cases it is the excessive weight (due to the opponent's weight and acceleration) and the muscle having to react very quickly.

To strengthen the pectoralis major you should lie flat on your back and the pectoralis minor you should lie at a 45 degree angle on a bench.
