Ingrown Toenail Removal Choctaw OK

Catching a toenail can be very painful as well - the skin beneath the nail is very tender. If it’s possible, retain the nail, even in its damaged condition, until the skin beneath it has had a chance to heal and toughen.

Ingrown Toenails

Prevent unwanted nail visitors

Nails on our hands and feet are vestigial remnants of our primitive origins - they were once claws. They still serve some function, acting as tough shields for exposed digits (although, with the advent of shoes, their value in protecting feet has severely diminished). But given the painful ailments that can afflict toenails, it may sometimes seem like toenails are more trouble than they’re worth.

Three conditions in particular commonly afflict toenails.

Trauma

Something dropping on your foot, or a toenail catching on something, is the manner in which toenails most frequently suffer trauma. If an object drops on the toe, the flesh beneath the nail may bleed, causing a very dark scab to form under the nail. The nail itself may also drop off. Catching a toenail can be very painful as well - the skin beneath the nail is very tender. If it’s possible, retain the nail, even in its damaged condition, until the skin beneath it has had a chance to heal and toughen. A broken nail is still better protection for tender skin than nothing. Note: Nails may be injured, split or break, in part because they are weakened by an inadequate diet.

Infection

This can be the result of an ingrown toenail (see below) or can be independent of that (sometimes passed along from athlete’s foot, for example). Nails exist in a moist environment, sometimes exacerbated by tight conditions in ill-fitting shoes . This environment can be ideal for fungus. Fungal conditions can damage the texture of the nail, give off an unpleasant odor and compromise the integrity of skin. There are treatments for a fungal infection, but prevention is the best treatment of all. Keep your toenails a reasonable length, make sure your toes are cleaned daily and pamper your feet with a massage when they are really weary. Wear clean socks and avoid excessive moisture. Finally, you may find a drying foot powder helpful.
