A knee brace is a type of support you wear if you suffer from an injured or painful knee. They are used to rehabilitate an injury or as a preventative measure. Knee braces are generally made from different combinations of materials like plastic, foam, metal and elastic straps. They are available in many different sizes, designs and colors.

Knee Brace Types

There are four types of knee braces:

  • Functional knee braces. These braces give support to injured knees.
  • Rehabilitative knee braces. These braces restrict movement of the damaged knee to limit any potentially harmful movements while the knee heals.
  • Prophylactic knee braces. These braces are designed to protect knees from intense impact during high-contact sports like football.
  • Unloader knee braces. These braces are made to provide temporary relief for those who experience arthritic knee symptoms.

Of the four major ligaments of the knee, the ACL and MCL are those most often injured by tears that may require surgery. A post-operation ACL knee brace or MCL knee brace is used in this instance to help speed the recovery process and avoid any further damage from harmful movements.
