It's all well and good if you've decided that you need to lose a few pounds of body fat . However, knowing the healthy way to go about it is another story. I probably tried to lose weight about 100 times throughout my life. The problem wasn't my motivation, it was my lack of knowledge on the subject. You see, I tried to shed pounds in all the wrong ways - by yo-yo dieting, trying phony fat-burning wonder pills, or even worse, by skipping meals.

While it's a big step to commit yourself to losing weight, it's another thing to have an educated understanding of how to do it with your health in mind. For one, it's virtually hopeless to lose weight and keep it off forever, just by altering your diet. Now, before I start getting hate mail from the supporters of every low-fat, no-carb diet out there just think about it. Did you lose all the weight you wanted and keep it off permanently just thanks to your diet? I would guess not.

Physical activity and a healthy diet go hand in hand. I'm sorry, but I don't care if you sitting on the couch snacking on truffles or whole wheat pita slices with soy-based hummus you will still need to get out there and get moving at some point in order to tighten the loose skin from the areas where you've lost the weight. Plus, diet can only take you so far.

If you want to lose weight in a healthy, permanent way it takes time.

Consider this:

Depriving yourself of food won't lose weight in the long term. Sure, you might be able to squeeze into your wedding dress or bikini in time for your honeymoon, but eventually you will gain the weight back because you're metabolism will catch up to you. It works like this, if you skip meals (even just a couple of times a week), your body thinks its starving. As a result it turns down the metabolism and turns on the fat storage similar to a bear in hibernation. Now, have you ever seen a skinny bear?

To burn body fat you must get moving. When you get moving your metabolism goes up and burns way more calories from your stored fat reserves. The good news is that you have total control over your metabolism genetics aside there are little tricks you can play on your body to get it to turn up the heat (metabolism).
