Last week, my session of medicine ball squats was interrupted by a phone call from my Father. When he asked me why I was so out of breath I mentioned what I'd been doing, but he had no idea what I was talking about. So I thought of the first comparison that came to mind and said "You know, like Rocky Balboa did in Rocky." I'll use the same analogy here because it worked with my dad. This might give you some idea of how outdated medicine ball training is; although, it's recently enjoyed a renaissance of sorts.
Medicine balls are extremely versatile and fun to train with! I train with them all the time and I can attest that they're an excellent way for perfecting strength and flexibility. Medicine ball workouts offer a variety of exercises. I use them for everything from warm-up stretches to incorporating them into traditional exercises.
This is a great way to awaken your nervous system remember what I said about taking your muscles by surprise by shaking up your resistance workouts ? I do this by using a medicine ball to add extra weight to traditional lunges or body squats. Medicine balls come in various weights, but like dumbbells you wouldn't work out with just one pair for every exercise now, would you?
Here are a few of my favorite medicine ball exercises:
This is a great exercise to trim your abs and obliques (upper hips and waist):
- Hold the ball level with your belly button height.
- Extend the ball out to arms' length.
- Twist from the waist first to the right then to the left, while keeping your feet planted and your lower body stiff.
Medicine Ball Lunges
You all know how much I love lower body blasters like lunges and squats.
- Hold the ball level with your belly button.
- Step forward with the right leg.
- Shift the ball over to the side of the right lunging leg.
- When one rep is done, switch legs.
