Olympic Plates

If you've performed weight training at a gym then you've most likely used Olympic-style plates. Olympic plates take their name from the sport of Olympic weightlifting. They are type used during professional competitions and typically the style found in commercial gyms and power lifting clubs.

The main difference between Olympic and standard weight plates is that Olympics have a larger center hole; while standard plates, the ones typically used in home gyms, have slightly smaller middle holes. You can't mix and match Olympic and standard-sized plates. If you buy an Olympic bar for your home gym then you're stuck with buying Olympic plates along with it. This is because the larger middle holes are the only big enough to accommodate the larger ends of the Olympic barbell. Olympic plates have a 2-inch diameter hole, whereas standard plates have a 1-inch hole.

Olympic weights come in increments of 2 ½-pounds, 5-pounds, 10-pounds, 25-pounds, 35-pounds and 45-pounds. To add any more than 45-pounds on either side of an Olympic bar you add more plates to the barbell.

Pricing for Olympic weight plates varies, but I found it ranging from about 45-cents per pound up to 69-cents per pound online. Olympic weights are also available in rubber-grip plates. You will find more information about those on the rubber-grip plates page .

There is consistent debate when it comes to purchasing Olympic weights versus standard weights for your home weight lifting equipment. Obviously the higher price of Olympic weights is an obvious sign that they are more durable, but we're talking weight plates here people. I personally purchased standard weights for one simple reason they were cheaper and they were all I could afford. As I see it, if you don't have aspirations to become a professional weight lifter then you'll still get the same mass building, strength training and toning prowess with standard weights as you would with Olympics.

If you're more serious ab...
