Does it really contain fewer pesticides?
We’ve all been told to buy organic fruit and vegetables at the supermarket, if we want to avoid pesticides. However there has always been the looming question: Does organically grown produce really contain fewer pesticides compared to conventionally grown crops?
When I’m spending $2 or sometimes $3 more a pound, you bet I want to know.
A study conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) shed some light on the topic. The study analyzed conventionally and organically grown apples, peaches, pears, strawberries and celery. Seems that organic really is the way to go. The USDA revealed that 73 percent of conventionally grown produce contained at least one pesticide, while only 23 percent of organically grown fruits and veggies contained residues. Overall, the study showed than 90 percent of the conventionally grown crops contained more than one pesticide residue.
Good news is the Diet Blog has released a top 10 list of fruits and veggies with the most pesticide residue:
- Bell peppers and spinach
- Green beans
This is a great list to keep handy the next time you’re at the grocery store. I know organic is expensive, but it’s better than eating pesticides. If you can afford it, do so – put the above items in your organic shopping cart.
