How to Treat Plantar Fascitis

Plantar Fascitis is a condition in the arch of the foot that, if not treated, will cause considerable pain. This pain will be felt on the fascia which can be seen in Fig 1.1. If left untreated it could turn into tendonitis in the tendons at the outer edges of the arch. These can also be seen in Fig 1.1 located at the X.

Causes of the ailment range from tight calf muscles, which put pressure and stress on the foot , to faulty biomechanics in the foot, or stress from prolonged standing, walking or running, especially if arch supports should be worn and are not being used.

If you allow this discomfort to continue without treatment, it may become very painful. As soon as pain is felt in this area it may be treated with some simple stretching and icing in the affected area.

To stretch the area, simply roll your foot over a tennis ball or a rolling pin. After stretching, ice the area for 10-15 minutes. This should be done a couple of times a day.

As in any injury, time should be taken off from the activity that is causing the discomfort, if possible. Since this will probably be impossible, stretching and icing will be a priority to eliminate the problem. One other exercise that you can incorporate into your regiment is a calf stretch. This will loosen up this muscle, which in turn, will take some pressure off of the foot. If no success is achieved by these exercises then it is time to seek some professional help. This can be obtained through a massage therapist, physiotherapist or foot care specialist. It may also be possible that you may need an arch support or orthotics.

If you allow this condition to continue without seeking help it will start to affect other parts of your body due to compensation and overwork of other muscles to help alleviate any discomfort found in the foot. If this applies to you, you may be feeling discomfort, aches or pain in the knee or lower back.
