For me, push-ups have become the ideal way to tone my upper body because I can do them anytime, anywhere. To be honest, since I've incorporated push-ups into my workout I've seen drastic results in my shoulders, triceps, chest (pectorals) and overall arm definition.

And push-ups aren't just for guys. Ladies, if you want to get rid of that hanging arm flab (out of shape triceps) then push-ups will work wonders. If callisthenic-style push-ups are too difficult, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with starting with modified push-ups. These are done with your knees and palms on the floor rather than plank-style.

Like I said before, it's always good to vary your workout routine by throwing something new into the mix so your muscles don't get too used to the same old exercises. With push-up bars you can make a slight change in the angle of your hands positioning or hand width to target a whole different set of upper body muscles.

With push-up bars you just place the bars on the floor at your chosen hand width and assume push-up position. You can also set them up to perform reverse dips from the floor. Just set them up behind you at your desired hand width and assume dip position for an excellent triceps workout.

Push-up bars are just $15 a pair online, but if you're looking for a tool to perform push-ups, dips and chin-ups with the same tool, then purchase a doorway chin up bar (about $35 online). These can be secured in a doorframe for doing pull-ups, or be placed on the floor for performing dips and push-ups. This is what I use to get the most for my dollar.

Remember, push-ups are difficult exercises. When I first started I could only do about 6. From there I worked my way up to 3 sets of 10 reps and now I can push up till the cows come home and my upper body has never looked better.

Here are my tips for perfect push-up performance:

  • Always start with your arms straight, but don't lock them (Figure 01).
  • Inhale as you lower yourself toward the floor; exhale as you push your body up (Figure 02).
  • Descend until your elbows bend at 90-degrees; your chest needn't touch the floor (Figure 02).
  • Your body should form a straight plank don't sag your tummy or stick your butt in the air (Figure 02).
