Think of recumbent bikes as the lounge chair of stationary bikes. However this doesn't mean they don't make you sweat!

Recumbent bikes support the lower back and minimize the stress on the knees; compared to an upright stationary bike. Recumbent bikes provide the same cardiovascular workout that upright bikes do, working the muscles of the gluteus, quadriceps, calves and hamstrings; however they are more ideal for individuals with back problems.

When exercising on a recumbent bike, the rider sits in the bucket seat and leans back against the backrest in a reclined position. The pedals on a recumbent bike are set horizontally in front of the seat, so your legs are straight out in front of you instead of below you. This puts lets pressure on the joints, but makes resistance from the pedals a bit higher giving you a more intense workout in a comfortable, natural position.

Recumbent bikes offer the same options that upright stationary bikes do - adjustable seats; programmable displays that show the time elapsed, heart rate, calories burned, speed and distance covered. Gym-quality recumbent bikes feature a variety of programmed outdoor terrains that allow you to focus on uphill, interval or manual training.

Recumbent bikes tend to cost more then upright stationary bikes. They can range from $800 to $3,000 online.
