Although a slide board doesn't offer the same resistance as a cross-country ski machine, you can still simulate the leg and arm movements for a decent aerobic, balance and agility program. A slide board is also cheaper and easier to store than a machine.

Slide Boards

A slide board is essentially a slippery floor mat. Slide boards are most popularly used as ice skating training devices. They're great for developing lateral strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness.

To work out on a slide board simply slip the nylon booties over your shoes and glide on the board from side-to-side in a skating motion. The slide board is basically a long, rectangular sheet of plastic, providing enough length for the user to slide back and forth to simulate skating. However, the slide board provides a great workout for more than just skaters. The to-and-fro action on the board forces the user to utilize the muscles in their lower legs - toning the buttocks and tops and sides of the thighs. For variety the user can also move their legs forward and backward, simulating cross-country skiing.
