What the heck is a weight tree? That's exactly what I thought after I first wandered into the weight room at my local gym. I had grabbed a few dumbbells and the only free spot in front of the mirror when I heard someone say don't stand in front of the weight tree!

Weight Trees

Weight Trees

What the heck is a weight tree? That's exactly what I thought after I first wandered into the weight room at my local gym. I had grabbed a few dumbbells and the only free spot in front of the mirror when I heard someone say don't stand in front of the weight tree!

Simply speaking, a weight tree is to plates as a weight rack is to dumbbells. At a gym you'll probably see them taking several different shapes, but their main mission is to hold weight plates ranging from 2.5-pounds and up to 45-pounds. Generally, weight trees keep workout spaces organized and clear of loose plates. If your home gym is cramped in a tiny apartment (I don't sound bitter, do I?) it will allow you to organize your weight plates so they're easy to access and change during exercise. Plus, then you won't be stumbling over them to get to your bench. A weight tree also saves your lower back from any injury you might suffer from picking up plates off the floor.

As I mentioned above, I've seen weight trees in triangular, square and vertical tower designs, but the majority are triangular frames, made of steel that sort of resemble the shape of Christmas trees. They have pegs along the front side to hold a collection of weight plates securely through their center holes. The front-only design is so you can tuck your tree away in the corner of a room.

If you decide to purchase a weight tree (I found mine for about $75 online) just make sure to double check if you need one to house Olym...
