How to Treat Whiplash

Whiplashes, or acceleration-deceleration-type injuries, are a combination of injuries involving muscles, ligaments, vertebrae, discs and nerves. Since the cervical spine (neck) is the most flexible part of the spine, it is the most susceptible to this injury.

Whiplash is most commonly caused in motor vehicle accidents, but can also be caused by contact or high velocity sports. Whiplash is an injury that should be treated immediately. If not, symptoms reoccur months or even years in the future. A medical doctor should be consulted immediately following such an injury to ensure that there are no fractures in the vertebrae. Following this, a professional therapist should be obtained to properly treat and eliminate the discomfort and pain.

Here are a few things you can do while waiting to see a therapist. Ice packs should be used for the first 48-72 hours to eliminate any swelling. If, after this initial period you are still experiencing swelling, pain and warmth around the injury, continue with ice packs until this has decreased. The next step is to apply alternating warm and cold packs. Three minutes warm and one minute cold. Repeat three times. This should be done two to three times a day for two to three days. This is called a vascular flush and will help in eliminating any remaining bad fluid.

The next step is to apply heat. This will help keep a new blood flow through the muscles and will also keep the muscles supple which will help when you begin stretching. Stretching should be very light with absolutely no pain being felt.

Stretches are shown in Fig 1.1, Fig 1.2, Fig 1.3.and Fig 1.4 When stretching, do not do any circular movements. This may cause a flare up of the injury.
